Hobby ideas for grandmother with short attention span?

September 28th, 2009 | by admin |

My grandma is trying to quit smoking and asked me to find a hobby to keep her busy but so far has rejected all my ideas (scrapbooking, organizing, gardening). She is not very good at sitting still so that eliminates many things. She is an older grandma so lots of vigorous activity would probably not work. I would appreciate any good suggestions! Thank you very much!

Get her on the computer .. it can eat up miles of time without really realizing it ..

Also dry embossing (with a small light table) is a great concentration tool that you can leave and come back to it ..

Good Luck!

First, congrats to her for quitting smoking. But why would vigorous activity not work? That’s a myth. She’s going to want to celebrate her newly-regained breathing abilities! My gram walks 2 miles a day and she’s 85 and still smoking. My suggestion is a membership to Curves or an ipod nano so she can download podcasts and have something to listen to, then go walking every day. I’m like her, I get bored if I have to walk without listening to something.

    Some interesting free podcasts:

    Wait Wait don’t tell me
    BBC Friday Night Comedy
    This American Life
    Unger Report
    Whadya Know
    Car Talk

good for her on the quiting smoking. i was about to say crochett or jewelry making before i heard she didn’t like to sit still. The idea behind post-smoking hobbies is keeping your hands or mouth occupied so they are not tempted to hold a cigarett. But not being able to sitt for long rules almost all of that out. I wish you luck on figuring something out.

Have you considered plastic canvas? Its an easy craft to learn. The projects are usually simple cut and sew. There are several plastic canvas groups on the net where they make magnets and exchange them via mail. Jean

If she still has decent eye sight maybe putting puzzles together. My Mom did a lot of "search a word" puzzle books which was really good at keeping her alert.

Have you tried maybe joining a senior bowling league at your neighborhood bowling alley? It is a good place to meet people and have some fun away from home. It is also good exercise.Good luck to her, I hope she can find something she likes.
